7 Space Saving Furniture Ideas

Jan 22nd 2014 at 4:03 AM

Whether you have a very small house, studio flat or apartment, or just want to take advantage of all the room available in your workplace or at an event you’re holding, there are a few great space-saving furniture solutions that you might want to consider.

The furniture you choose to have in your home, workplace or at your event can have a big impact on the overall look and feel of the room. You don’t want the place to feel cramped and look messy, so why not get creative with some space saving furniture?

1) Folding Tables

Folding tables are an excellent piece of space saving furniture. You can get different types of folding tables: those where the legs fold down, and those where the table-top itself folds inwards.

The legs folding can be beneficial if you have somewhere to store the table. This could be under the sofa, against the wall or in an area in the kitchen. Being able to completely flatten your table is a great way of saving space.

Folding tables are very flexible.

On the other hand, some tables have a relatively thin section in the middle that will always stand tall, with the option of folding out an extension of the table-top and legs at either side. The benefit of this kind of folding table is that it can always remain out at the side of your room and the small section can be used should you need it.

These latter type of tables can usually fold out to be quite big as well, resulting in more table space when it is needed. They sometimes offer chair storage underneath the middle section (for folding chairs) as well, enhancing their space-saving qualities even further.

2) Tall Storage

If you don’t have a lot of room on the floor then don’t panic – tall storage is another fantastic space saving furniture solution. Whether you choose to buy a tall bookshelf, cupboards or shelves attached freely to the wall, why not take advantage of the empty vertical space?

People often overlook the wall area and begin panicking when they simply don’t have enough storage room on the floor. Investing in some form of tall storage is a great solution, especially free standing shelves or cupboards, as they don’t even have to touch the floor, unlike most standard bookcases.

3) Stacking Chairs

Stacking chairs are another brilliant space saving furniture idea. If you often have a lot of guests but don’t really have the room to constantly have 8 chairs around the table or out in the lounge area, then investing in stacking chairs is an excellent choice.

Stacking chairs are obviously designed to stack, resulting in them taking up significantly less room than other types of chair. These seats can easily be moved out of the way and brought in when needed, making them a great piece of space saving furniture.

4) Sofa Bed

Whether you only have a studio apartment, or you often have guests to stay over but don’t have a spare bedroom, sofa beds are a great option. During the day they can be folded up and used as a comfortable and relaxing sofa, and then at night they’re easy to unfold and use as a bed.

Sofa beds are a great piece of furniture to have.

Sofa beds are a fantastic space saving furniture solution, as you are combining two items into one! They are available in a variety of colours and sizes as well, so you’re sure to get something you like.

5) Baskets

Although not often considered to be a piece of ‘furniture’ per se, baskets can be incredibly useful space saving solutions. They are very versatile and can be used in practically any room in the house, including the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom.

The great thing about baskets is that they can easily be placed on top of cupboards and shelves, as well as underneath the bed or at the side of the television. They can hold a whole host of things, and can be easily moved around, making them a flexible, space saving and unusual piece of furniture.

6) Folding Chairs

Just like folding tables, folding chairs are another innovative space saving furniture idea. As mentioned above, folding chairs can something fit inside folding tables, saving even more space! However, even if they can’t, folding chairs are still very flexible and easily transportable.

They are often designed to be lightweight and can be stored in a variety of places; so it’s really up to you where you keep them! And of course, if you only have an occasional need, folding chairs offer the perfect solution for when you have guests round and need extra seating.

7) Seat Storage

The 7th space saving furniture idea is seat storage. Often used in bedrooms or the living area, you can purchase chairs and sofas that have storage areas inside them. Generally, the seat area will lift up, revealing lots of space for you to store things.

If you do invest in this kind of space saving furniture, it’s best to store things in the seats that you won’t need when people are there; you don’t want to have to make your guests stand up and sit down every few minutes while you get things from underneath them!

In conclusion, there are a lot of space saving furniture ideas available; it just depends on your personal preferences as to which ones you choose. Whatever your decision, with the large variety of colours, shapes and sizes, you’re sure to find exactly what you need.
