What is Antioxidants?

Nov 30th 2010 at 5:00 PM

Antioxidants are nature's cell defense mechanisms. As long as we have sufficient antioxidant stores in our cells, damage from free radicals will be minimized.

If we lack sufficient antioxidant reinforcements, the cumulative damage from free radicals will severely injure our cells. Such oxidative damage is now believed to be the force behind the onset of degenerative diseases.

Dr. Richard Passwater, first scientist to describe the nutritional role of antioxidants, since then research about antioxidants has grown until today. Vit A, C, E, beta carotene, CoQ10, selenium, zinc,1-glutathione, alpha lipoic acid and others have stepped in the limelight as antioxidants.

Our body produces some antioxidants, while others must be obtained from our diet. They also regenerate in the presence of other antioxidants - this is the reason why we should always supplement with a wide spectrum of antioxidants.

What antioxidant is the magic bullet? None, because they work best when they work together - synergy. It means that the effect of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Antioxidants at work:

Vit E - premier antioxidant of the cellular membrane
Vit C - king in the extracellular fluids and works best with gluthathione
Vit C, E, Selenium - enhance effect of beta carotene
Beta Carotene - potent antioxidant
CoQ10  assists in energy transfer reactions and rejuvenating Vit E. Together protects the mitochondrial membrane from oxidative fires of respiration.
Alpha-lipoic acid regenerates Vit C which in turn rejuvenates Vit E - these antioxidants will choreograph their battle, protecting the cell in synergy - masterpiece of Mother Nature
