Vitamin D

Sep 12th 2013 at 11:43 PM

A survey by IBOPE reveals that over 60% of women over 45 years - main victims of evil - never made a densitometry. The test is very simple: it is the most sophisticated X-ray that measures the amount of calcium from bone tissue.

Another worrying factor is that 96% believe that osteoporosis causes pain and expect symptoms to seek help, and there is no painful sensation - just after the break, which could be avoided with the accompaniment.

Much of the female audience also knows that the calcium intake is the way to prevent the deterioration of the skeleton.

Still, six in ten women under 45 believe the myth that a glass of milk a day is enough. In fact, this amount is only a third of the recommended.

The ideal is 1200 milligrams per day - the equivalent of four servings dairy - and the Brazilian eats only 400 milligrams.

Vitamin D is important in this equation, since low levels impair calcium absorption.

Doctors suggest consumption between 400 and 600 milligrams daily, but eat 100 milligrams. Because few foods are rich in nutrients, sun bathing is the solution - a mere 15 minutes.

There is also the story of do what I say, but do not do what I do. Women over the age of 45 recognize the importance of regular physical activity for prevention, only less than a third of them follow the direction to the letter. The rheumatologist Diego Domitian, the Hospital of São Paulo, warns that a sedentary lifestyle can be more dangerous than the lack of milk: "It is essential to practice impact exercises - such as walking - balance and especially those for mass gain and muscle strength. " Few recognize that prevention should be done since childhood, and not just in adulthood.
