Unmasking Most Common Culprit of Foot Pain – Our Shoes
Anyone, anytime, anywhere can get foot pain. Unlike the face, hands or any other part of our body, feet are the ones getting least attention. Nobody realizes how important they are until a problem surfaces.
What Causes Foot Pain?
There can be many things because of which we experience pain in our feet. Bunions, hammer toes, calluses, bacteria and infections, all can be painful. But there is one factor, one common culprit that is source of all maladies – shoes.
Comfort is as important as wearing a pair of shoes. One might as well walk barefooted if the shoes she’s wearing are uncomfortable.
Even from a podiatric POV, lack support is a crucial element in foot pain. That is why most podiatrists, if not all, recommend at least one from pair of athletic sneakers, orthotics or insoles. Particularly from preventive viewpoint, sneakers are great because they provide best support.
Slippers, as comfortable as they might appear, are one of the biggest perpetrators of foot pain because they lack the support and as a result, increase the chances of dysfunctions and abnormalities.
Supportive Footwear is the Answer to Foot Pain
While comfortable footwear won’t magically revert back everything to normality, a decent pair of shoes can prevent future foot problems and protect the foot, from the outside and from the within.
A podiatrist’s definition of supportive shoes refers to a pair that bends only at the toes. If it’s bending from its center, it’s unsupportive.
Here are some tips on getting the right footwear:
Acknowledge your Real Size:
Unless you got your shoe size measured by a pro, and by the end of the day, it’s probably not the ‘right size’. This is because our feet expand as the day progresses and by the end of the day, they are biggest.
Well, don’t completely ditch them. But remember that they the biggest of all culprits. They are for pools and showers, so keep their use limited to those places.
Be Rational, Not Emotional
Most of the times, there is no alternative to comfort. If you are going out for a couple of hours or more, especially in cases where more walking is involved, go out in a pair of sneakers or footwear that has insole in it.
Like I said before, you don’t have to ditch them altogether. If you’re putting them on for a shorter period, and you know you will not be walking too much in them, it’s probably okay. But if you always find a reason to put stilettos on instead of comfortable shoes, you are just inviting the pain.
