Treatment Options for Neurodegenerative Disorders

Apr 17th 2014 at 1:06 AM

Thousands of people around the world suffer from various types of neurodegenerative disorders. One of the most common one among them is Alzheimer’s disease. While a lot of research has been carried out to treat Alzheimer, no permanent cure has been found yet. However, there are treatment options available. Let us take a look at them and the research work that is going on in the field here.

Cholinesterase Inhibitors

Alzheimer’s disease occurs when sick nerve endings are not able to send the nerve signals to the next nerve ending, thereby forming a chain. This impairs the memory of those suffering from the disease. What the cholinesterase inhibitors do is to help in the production of a chemical called acetylcholine. This chemical helps in getting the message across to the next nerve ending. However, it is not a permanent cure and only offers a temporary solution to the problem. Cholinesterase inhibitors are manufactured by several leading pharmaceutical companies and available under different brand names.

Temporary Solution

As mentioned above cholinesterase inhibitors only offer a temporary solution for after a few years, the sick nerve endings begin to degenerate. What this does is to completely destroy the mechanism among the nerve chain to transmit messages. This results in debilitating memory loss in patients.

Research Work

Extensive research to find a permanent cure to neurodegenerative disorders is being carried out in various parts of the world. One of the leading research institutions that have come out with some significant breakthroughs is Roskamp Institute, located in Sarasota, Florida.

Dr. Michael Mullan

The institute’s research team is led by Dr. Michael Mullan. Now, Michael Mullan is a name that has become synonymous with the fight against Alzheimer’s disease globally. What the research team under the leadership of Dr. Mullan has done is to isolate a certain amyloidal protein in the body which is known to trigger the onset of Alzheimer’s and other related disorders.

The research team at the Roskamp Institute has also come out with findings on the kind of diet that needs to be maintained if one were to stop the onset of the disease. Research done by Michael Mullan and his team of researchers has found that a diet that is high on fibers and natural ingredients could have a significant impact in stopping the onset of the disease in the first place. Similarly, they have also done extensive studies on the connection between medical conditions such as high blood pressure and Alzheimer’s disease.

There have been some other significant breakthrough research initiatives that have been carried out in other parts of the world too. For example, researchers at the University of Buffalo are Department of Endocrinology has found out that insulin could have a role to play in fighting this dreaded disease.
