Tinnitus is not dangerous
If it becomes damaged hearing, the areas in the brain that process sound, the tendency to compensate go extra effort. The result is that they are hypersensitive and ultimately self stimuli (sound) produce. A bit like a microphone that is too loud.
Tinnitus is not dangerous in the sense that you do not die. But patients can be really suffer from their symptoms. 40,000 to 60,000 Dutch have a severe variant of tinnitus, they usually hear constantly piercing.
A quarter of them finds this unbearable life. They often experience problems such as sleep and concentrate. They may feel tense, irritable, helpless and desperate.
Sometimes they come by the disorder in social isolation because they can follow conversations. Less by the constant sound
With prolonged symptoms, patients are sometimes (severe) depression .
Those feelings are reinforced by the area of the brain that produces sound in close connection with the area in which emotions are regulated. Probably
Dealing with tinnitus
In about 1 percent of the patients, the hearing loss may be corrected (which also the tinnitus disappears).
The rest are often told that they have to deal with it 'to live'. Luckily they can to get good help there, in the form of ear training and behavioral therapy.
Treatment, usually in groups, patients learn to accept and get used to the noise, to distract from the brains you experience the sound as less disruptive. Just as you eventually no longer feels or sees an eyeglass frame.
