The Role of Atomizers in E-Cigarettes

May 17th 2015 at 10:53 PM

An atomizer is the most important part of an e-cigarette. It’s responsible for converting the e-liquid into vapor. The performance of the e-cigarette is largely dependent upon its atomizer. But before delving into the role of atomizers, let’s take a quick look at the parts of an e-cigarette.

Parts of an electronic vapor cigarette

The basic e-cigarette comprises of three parts, namely:

  • The atomizers, which contains the heating element, and is responsible for heating the e-liquid to release vapor.
  • The battery, responsible for powering the e-cigarette
  • The cartridge, which contains the e-liquid.

Note: The atomizer and the cartridge together make up the cartomiser, which is usually fixed in basic e-cigarettes.

However, advanced e-cigarettes may have the atomizers and the e-liquid tank as a rebuildable unit, or only the atomizer where the e-liquid is dripped directly. In the former case, the atomizer and the tank would together be referred to as a clearomiser.

The functioning of the e-cigarette is simple. When the e-cigarette is switched on, the battery powers the atomizers. The heating coils in the atomizer heat up the e-liquid soaked wicker in the cartomiser. Heating the e-liquid releases the vapor. Now that you know about the parts of an e-cigarette, and where the atomizer fits in the device, let’s take a closer look at atomizers and their role in e-cigarettes.

The role of atomizers in E-cigarettes

The atomizer is responsible for converting the e-liquid into vapor, and therefore, is the most important part of an e-cigarette. They can be either simple or rebuildable. The latter are advanced models meant for seasoned vapers, and are of two kinds— dripping atomizers and tank atomizers.

In the case of e-cigarettes that have the atomizer and cartridge combined into one unit (cartomiser), it would then comprise of the coil unit, which is made with a combination of very fine heating coils and wicker strands mostly made of polyester.

Since atomizers are responsible for heating the e-liquid, e-cigarettes may sometimes get hot when being used. Similar to a light bulb, the atomizer may burn out after considerable use. The indication of that is when your vape would begin to have a burnt taste. In such as case, you’ll have to change the atomizer coils, which are easily available and pretty inexpensive. On an average, the life of the heating coil in the atomizer is about 2 weeks, post which it needs to be replaced, sometimes they can last up to a month.

Cleaning and maintaining the atomizer is more or less limited to replacing the heating coils, once every two weeks unless one is changing the flavor of eliquid they are using or if the wicks have dried up eliquid due to improper use. However, some e-liquids with a high VG content might gunk up the heating coil, so the user might have to clean it more often. If you’re a frequent vaper, it would be a good idea to keep a spare atomizer handy. If you want to check out some good e cigarette accessories online, you can visit: https://www.litejoy.co.in/
