They are now one of the most common STDs and their incidence is exceeded only by troche monists, gonorrhea and Chlamydia.
The number of visits to private physicians because of genital warts however is greater than the number of queries because of gonorrhea and genital herpes
Infection of the cervix with HPV is almost always asymptomatic and more common genital wart.
Though genital warts were recognized as STDs in ancient times, the medical community has recognized only this method of transmission over the past 25-30 years.
Interval between exposure and the appearance of genital warts is 3-8 months. Penile lesions are found in up to 70% of sexual partners of women with cervical intraepithelial neo plasma. The percentage of partner’s subclinical infection is unknown.
Natural history and association with Cancer
The natural history of genital warts and subclinical HPV infection is not well established.
The warts seem to persist and recur despite treatment, may regress spontaneously, and rarely may undergo malignant transformation.
Seems that infection of the cervix u terrine HPV spectrum and have similar behavior, although the appearance of premalignant lesions is not uncommon.
In one study up to 40% of the women developed NCI 24 months after the identification of types 16 and 18 HPV.
