It is known that papal loam viruses cause tumors in animals, and certain types are able to transform normal cells into malignant vitro.
The integration of HPV DNA into the host cell genome is usually seen in invasive carcinomas and cell lines of cervical cancer, but benign and premalignant HPV DNA lesions is usually extra chromosomal.
Certain types of HPV DNA were found in all types of genital cancers and precancerous lesions.
On the other hand, many clinically and microscopically normal tissues harboring HPV DNA
Epidemiological studies show that women with cytological evidence of HPV are at increased risk of dysplasia and cervical cancer.
There is need for prospective studies to determine whether HPV infection actually precedes the onset of dysplasia or cancer and to investigate the role of HPV as a cofactor more than etiologic agent.
