Today, many women are seen afflicted with hormonal disorders. One of the most common of these hormonal imbalances is polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS. A healthy diet and exercise regime should be followed to reduce the excess weight. One should try and include high quality carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, brown rice, wheat bread, whole grains etc. These foods are rich in fiber and minerals. One can also include lean protein sources to the diet. Even a moderate exercise routine such as walking done on a regular basis can help. Research shows that though diet coupled with exercise may not show results on the weighing scale, they can definitely improve insulin sensitivity which in turn can bring ovulation back on track and regularize menstrual cycles.
A yoga routine which includes pranayama and meditation can also be practiced. Certain yoga poses such as butterfly pose, reclining butterfly pose, corpse pose and other poses can be useful in managing polycystic ovary syndrome. However yoga practice should only be carried out under the guidance of a certified yoga teacher. If done on a regular basis, yoga can help to calm and relax the mind as well as result in weight loss and positively impact menstrual cycles. PCOS is a chronic condition where weight alterations and fertility problems can affect one's quality of life. The physical symptoms of PCOS can lead to considerable emotional distress and low self respect. Delayed diagnosis of this condition can even cause depression and anxiety which in turn can lead to more irregular cycles. The psychological negativity can impact management of PCOS which involves taking well informed decisions pertaining to health and adopting healthy lifestyle practices. Hence besides physical health, emotional health issues should also be addressed in the treatment of this syndrome.
