Teaming up with Livestrong
Sindy Smith relied on her friends and faith to guide her through breast cancer, a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction. While recovering, she received another blow – her doctor informed her that she had cancer again…ovarian cancer.
Sindy was beside herself, and when looking for a place to turn – she found world-class cyclist, Lance Armstrong and his foundation, Livestrong. Lance created the program while in the process of surviving his own bout with testicular cancer. He put together a team of medical professionals and cancer survivors to help others through the process and provide a strong support system aimed at improving physical and emotional well-being for those battling for their lives.
Livestrong is a 12-week program designed to fit the specific needs of those who want to improve their quality of life before, during and after treatment. It is free of charge, through grants awarded by the Livestrong Foundation grants. Sindy’s local Y had received one in 2011 and started classes that year.
Smith talked of how beneficial the Livestrong program was for her. “My chemotherapy treatments for ovarian cancer made me tired all the time,” she said. “My hair fell out and my stomach was upset. I was too weak to do much of anything.” Once she began attending the 75-minute classes held twice a week she began noticing a difference. “I was getting stronger and had a better attitude,” she said. “Everyday tasks were not as difficult. I was doing new and different things, getting to know other women in class and having fun.” Under supervision from trained and certified instructors, Sindy and the others in her group worked out with weights and cardio equipment to improve balance, endurance, flexibility and strength. Additional sessions in aqua-aerobics, Palates, stationary cycling, yoga and help from a nutritionist rounded out the program. The entire group had good results and Sindy considers it a life-altering and life-saving experience.
Cancer is scary, and maintaining a support group is important. It is easier to beat with a team. We wish Sindy, her group and Livestrong continued success.
