Steps for the Medical Surrogacy Process
There are ample medical realities that a surrogate mother should know. Even if you are just thinking of applying to become a surrogate mother, the complete medical process of gestational surrogacy should be understandable to you as becoming a surrogate mother is a life changing experience where you are generously fulfilling the dream of a childless couple.
Doctors will not use your eggs
The eggs will always be of the intended parent or a third party egg donor and that's what makes this not a traditional surrogacy at all. In traditional pregnancy, it is always your eggs and your partner's sperms.
Series of tests
You need to undergo a number of tests at the fertility center if selected for becoming a surrogate mother. This generally involves a vaginal ultrasound, a hysteroscopy, routine blood tests, etc. You will also have to undergo a PAP smear test to confirm you are not suffering from cervical cancer and a mammography test too! All these tests are to just make sure that you are in a sound health and will not affect the baby in your womb in any negative way.
Medications for uterus preparation
Starting from standard pills for birth control to estrogen, your uterus is prepared well for receiving the embryo and this includes medications for getting progesterone hormone too. However, it should be taken into consideration that the medications may vary from one individual to another depending upon various factors. IVF is the method which is employed in gestational surrogacy.
Embryo transfer to the uterus
Embryos are flushed in a liquid medium and then into your uterus through the cervix and use of ultrasound can be there to ensure that embryo is rightly placed at its intended position. You may need to lie down for a period of time just after the successful embryo transfer.
Follow-up blood test
A simple blood test is usually performed after two weeks of the embryo transfer to check whether it has resulted to pregnancy or not. However, medications will continue at this stage too until the doctors confirmed the same by an ultrasound test.
Surrogacy agencies always work hard to ensure that you have a sound and safe gestational surrogacy and the best OB or gynecologist is there to help you along with counselors and physicians. The aim of such agencies moves towards the welfare of both surrogate mother and the intended parents in a comprehensive manner.
