Roskamp Institute inching Towards a Cure for Alzheimer’s disease
There is no drug treatment available to halt or reverse the symptoms of Alzheimer Disease and this is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. The most that existing medical treatments can do is improve the symptoms or even slow down the inexorable progress of the disease. Even worse, not every person responds in the same way to these treatments. As a result, an Alzheimer diagnosis is nothing short of a death sentence. However, there is good news from the Sarasota, Florida based Roskamp Institute which specializes in conducting research on diseases of the brain. This institute has made a startling discovery concerning the causes of this disease that has resulted in a great deal of excitement in the medical world.
Researchers have known since a while that Alzheimer disease can be caused due to one or more of three reasons. These include a gradual accumulation of the protein amyloid (which fact was discovered by Roskamp Dr. Michael Mullan), inflammation of tissue in the brain and also problems associated with a protein called Tau. The research team at Roskamp has made the astounding discovery that these three problems have a connection, thereby taking researchers a step close to finding a cure for it.
Roskamp Institute researchers have discovered that a molecule called spleen tyrosine kinas (SYK) is connected with the three different pathologies listed above. What this signifies is that a treatment that blocks this molecule will be able to stop the three different causes associated with Alzheimer disease. There is no such treatment available as of now but this discovery provides a new direction to research on this disease. If a single drug can put the brakes on Alzheimer disease then the millions of people who have been diagnosed with the disease can hope to avoid dementia and death due to it.
As of now, people suffering from Alzheimer disease are treated with drugs that inhibit the production of amyloid or tau proteins. They can be used to improve the debilitating symptoms of the disease, thereby helping the patient enjoy a productive life. Other treatments focus on reducing the inflammation of the nervous tissue. However, the results of these treatments are mixed as a matter of fact the results are very slight at best.
The Roskamp Institute has been at the forefront of research into the causes of Alzheimer disease and a lasting cure for it. This institute has highly motivated scientists and physicians on its roster and it also receives support from governmental and private agencies. It therefore comes as no surprise to anybody who is familiar with this field that this institute is making its way to finding a lasting cure for Alzheimer disease.
