The Benefits of Collagen

Collagen is one of the most common proteins in your body. It is very fibrous and bundles of these fibres connect and support supports other tissues, such as your skin, bone, tendons, muscles, and cartilage. Collagen supports your internal organs too and is even found in your teeth. There are more than 25 types of naturally occurring collagens in your body – each with important supportive roles to play. In fact, you can think of collagen as the glue that holds your body together and in fact, it actually makes up about a quarter of the total protein in your body.

Collagen fibres are extremely strong, and are responsible for keeping your cell walls strong as well as working inside cells with elastin to support your body’s tissues. To put it in simple terms, collagen gives your body tissues firmness and strength, which is vital to the functioning of your lungs, blood vessels, bones and tendons. Where most people have heard about collagen is probably in its role plumping up the surface of the skin and keeping wrinkles and lines at bay.

Unfortunately as part of the aging process, collagen fibres begin to break down and become less elastic from the age of about 25 and this process is known as depletion. While it may sound plausible that if collagen depletion leads to skin sagging and wrinkles, then you might think that replenishing it by using a collagen containing cream would repair the elasticity and health of aging skin. But unfortunately it doesn’t work this way and there’s no scientific evidence that collagen based creams do little more than exfoliate the skin. It is widely held that collagen, applied to your skin, can’t penetrate the skin’s protective outer layer, the epidermis. Collagen molecules are too big to penetrate, and even if they did, they wouldn’t be able to integrate themselves within the complex collagen bundles in the skin.

However, there are things you can do to help slow and even reverse this process: Eating healthily and including foods that can help to support your body in creating new collagen is one of them. A variety of foods are believed to provide the building blocks of collagen production. For example, soya products such as soya milk and cheese contain an element known as genistein, which is thought to help to block the enzymes that tend to break down and age your skin. Dark green vegetables too are excellent foods to encourage your body to produce collagen: High in Vitamin C, regularly including vegetables such as kale, spinach, spring greens, and asparagus can help to strengthen your body’s ability to manufacture collagen.

vitimin c,Red fruits and vegetables are also brilliant assistants, helping to slow the deletion of your collagen as they contain lycopene’s that act as antioxidants. Red peppers, beetroot, red chard and fresh and tinned tomatoes, as well as dark berries such as blueberries and blackberries are also believed to bolster the antioxidants in your body and so reduce the depletion of collagen.

Even though creams appear ineffective, supplements such as Xenca’s Collagen care for skin from the inside out. Revitalise Skin uses natural ingredients, including the ACE vitamins and zinc to boost your body’s healing processes, while Collagen Revitalise has been linked to benefits such as firmer skin and a reduction in fine lines.

It’s not just for beautification either; Xenca’s Revitalise MSM contains Methylsulphonlymethane, a naturally occurring protein contained in every cell in your body. It plays a vital role in maintaining healthy joints as well as reducing the symptoms of arthritis. Glucosamine has also been proven to be particularly effective for combating joint pain and stiffness, (so much so it’s even available for dogs)! Xenca have combined it with MSM as well as collagen and vitamin C to give you the full benefits of all these effective natural ingredients in a single tablet.
