Researchers Seek Volunteers for Study of Alzheimer Disease

Nov 3rd 2014 at 12:19 AM

Alzheimer Disease is one of the leading forms of dementia in the United States and it is made particularly dangerous on account of the fact that researchers do not know enough about this disease at present. Once this debilitating disease affects a patient then there is no chance of a cure and the patient condition worsens until his or her eventual death. On average, a patient survives for around 7 years before eventually succumbing to the disease. While some people have been known to live for around 15 years after an Alzheimers diagnosis, this is indeed an uncommon occurrence. In fact, the patient quality of life during this period diminishes rapidly.

Dr. Michael Mullan is one of the leading researchers in the field of Alzheimers studies and he has made a tremendous amount of progress in studying this disease. Currently the Chief Executive Officer of Roskamp Institute in Sarasota Florida and the Chairman of the Board at a noted pharmaceutical firm called Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals, he has been instrumental in reaching breakthroughs in understanding this disease. The Roskamp Institute, under the stewardship of Dr. Mullan, is at the receiving end of grants from many public and private bodies purely on account of the progress it has made in studying various diseases of the brain and mind.

The fight against Alzheimers disease has received support not just from donors but also from the families of people suffering from this disease. Dr. Michael Mullan has already discovered that one of the reasons that lead to this disease is a genetic inaccuracy in the patient. Alzheimers has been found to occur in families. As a matter of fact, much progress has been made in the understanding of this disease thanks to the many Alzheimers patients and their families who have volunteered to be studied.

Further progress in the understanding of Alzheimers disease can only be made if increasing numbers of patients come forward to be studied and to participate in clinical trials of drugs. This can be of great benefit to the patients themselves since these clinical trials give them access to revolutionary treatments even if there is no guarantee of success patients are glad to have an increased chance of beating this dread disease. Besides, many people gain a lot of satisfaction from knowing that they are contributing something to help get a cure for this disease.

Dr. Mullan research team is always on the lookout for patients and their families who can volunteer to take part in their tests because this is essential to finding a cure. Hope is on the horizon for sufferers of Alzheimers disease thanks to the concerted efforts of medical researchers in the United States and other parts of the world.
