Researchers Increase Efforts In The Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease
A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is nothing less than a death sentence and it is particularly tragic when the diagnosis happens at a relatively young age. This neurological disease is responsible for almost three quarters of all cases of dementia and patients experience extreme loss of mental and bodily functions until they eventually succumb to it.
In fact, the life expectancy after diagnosis is approximately 5 years, although this can sometimes go as far as 10 years. Dr. Michael Mullan has been one of the leading campaigners against this disease and the institute he heads has been responsible for some of the latest advances in its understanding and treatment. Educated in London and the United States, this scientist is renowned in the medical world for the breakthroughs he has brought about in the understanding of neurological diseases, but especially of Alzheimer’s.
Dr. Mullan Mullan’s Sarasota, Florida based Roskamp Institute has a team of experienced researchers who spare no effort to unravel the mysteries of Alzheimer’s Disease so that a cure can eventually be found. They are very close to understanding what causes it, whether the cause be genetic or environmental or a combination of the two.
The teams consist of people from various related disciplines and they pursue a wide range of leads to further their understanding of this disease. It is an unfortunate fact that there is no cure for this disease at present and that the only treatment options available can improve the symptoms or slow them down temporarily at best. The institute also conducts research into a number of other neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions, with a special emphasis on addictions and head trauma.
The battle against Alzheimer’s Disease is far from over and a lot of time and effort is currently being committed to it. The Michael Mullan Roskamp Institute, for instance, makes available state of the art infrastructure to its teams of researchers. There is also a great deal of public support for their efforts in the form of generous monetary donations; not surprisingly, many people who have lost loved ones to this disease are eager to contribute to finding a cure for it. The Government is also aware of the importance of research into this disease because of its negative and massive impact on public health, hence awarding generous research grants towards scientific research.
There is no doubt at all that a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease is just around the corner, in a manner of speaking. This is very good news for the public at large since the increasing longevity of the population puts people at greater risk of getting the disease. A cure for this disease means that people can live life to the fullest for longer than any time before in the human story.
