Merits of Residential Treatment Facility over Non Residential Treatment

Sep 24th 2014 at 5:59 AM

When choosing a treatment facility for alcohol or drug addiction treatment, you are likely to come across residential and non residential treatment centres. Which one is better? In most cases, residential treatment wins.

Residential treatment means you have to stay in the treatment centre for around 30 to 90 days, depending on how the length of your rehabilitation programme. Non residential treatment, on the other had, means partial hospitalisation or outpatient treatment. You are allowed to go home, as long as you have stable and excellent living conditions with a supportive family.

Each treatment option has its own merits depending on your condition, your budget, and the severity of your addiction, but on the whole, residential treatment is more effective than non residential treatment. Here are some of the benefits of staying in a residential treatment facility:

  • 24/7 care and assistance. Round-the-clock care is one of the most important merits of a residential treatment facility. You are required to stay in the treatment centre, so there is always someone to attend to you when you experience withdrawal or you have questions regarding your treatment. Severe alcohol or drug addiction requires this type of care, especially when dual diagnosis or other health problems are confirmed.

  • Supervised recovery. A residential treatment facility is manned by licensed and experienced addiction and medical specialists who can supervise your recovery. Quitting drugs or alcohol on your own often leads to relapse. Withdrawal symptoms can become unbearable and fatal, too. Severe drug or alcohol dependence is best treated under the supervision of these medical and addiction specialists.

  • You can focus on recovery. The real world can be distracting and may cause you to fall off your recovery track. Staying in a residential treatment facility allows you to focus more on your recovery without having to worry about temptations and distractions. When you complete your treatment programme, you can be sure that you are sober, clean, and more confident to re-enter society.

  • You do not have to feel alone. You can meet new people and friends when you stay a residential treatment facility. They could be recovering addicts themselves, or they could be the helpful staff and your counsellors. You can bond with these people and you do not have to feel like you are being judged, because in a way, you are going through a similar ordeal with them.

  • You can enjoy holistic activities. There are residential treatment centres in the UK that provides holistic activities as part of their varied and interesting programmes. Music therapy and equine therapy are some examples.
