Lung Cancer Risks People Can Control

Apr 7th 2015 at 12:59 AM

It is estimated that more than 158,000 Americans will die from lung cancer in 2015 alone. As the No. 1 cancer killer of both men and women in the U.S., this disease is not only potentially devastating, it’s also rather widespread. Understanding risk factors for lung cancer and what steps can be taken to reduce those risks can make a very big difference in whether or not this potential killer will develop.

Like most forms of cancer, lung cancer has its share of risks that people can control and others they may have no sway over. Controlling those risks that can be tackled, however, is important if the desire is to increase chances of potentially preventing this disease.

The following are some of the risk factors people can take steps to control or even eliminate:

  • Smoking – This is one of the main causes of lung cancer. The risk of lung cancer rises with the number of cigarettes smoked daily and the number of years the habit has been indulged. Quitting at any time can significantly lower risks.
  • Second-hand smoke – It’s not just smokers who are susceptible to lung cancer. Those who live around them are also at increased risk. Eliminating exposure to second-hand smoke can reduce chances.
  • Chemical and environmental exposure – Exposure to radon gas in homes or chemicals in the workplace can also increase risk. Understanding what is present in the air being breathed and taking steps to prevent inhalation if potentially toxic substances are present can reduce risks. For radon gas, home-testing kits can show if levels are present. For workplace chemicals, proper face protection can help.

Preventing lung cancer isn’t always possible thanks to risk factors, such as genetics, but there are a number of steps people can take to reduce the likelihood this disease will develop. If risks are high, altering behaviors and taking precautions can make a difference.
