Know when Children need a Eye Specialist

Feb 27th 2014 at 8:13 AM

It’s difficult to judge when a child needs to see a children’s eye specialist. However, a number of experts believe that eye exams on a regular basis will help protect a child’s vision and will offer him/her better eye health when compared to those kids who avoid seeing  a Children’s eye specialist on a periodic basis.

It is to be noted that children’s eye health begins when they are born and continues throughout childhood. For a number of children, an evaluation by a pediatrician is sufficient; however, if a child has a family history of sight and vision problems or showcases early symptoms of the same, he or she certainly needs to see a children’s eye specialist for better advice and treatment.

Many problems which may affect a child's vision will need clinical care by an expert or other health care professional. The following are a few eye related problems faced by children –

· Childhood Glaucoma

· Cataracts

· Crossed- Eyes (Strabismus)

· Refractive Errors

Most schools require that children have an eye examination before they begin public school. At times, a pediatrician may fail to see a problem which only a Children’s eye specialist may notice; this is why it is crucial have your child examined by an expert.

The symptoms of possible vision problems in children may include the following:

· Trouble seeing information on the chalk board

· Difficulty when reading and writing

· Not wanting to go to school

· Poor school performance

· Headaches or eye pain

· Difficulty paying attention

· Blurry or double vision

· Taking longer than normal to complete homework

If your child complains of any of the above problems, then consult a children’s eye specialist, as soon as possible.
