However, immunotherapy should be performed carefully because too early exposure to a high dose of allergen can trigger an allergic reaction.
Though many individuals are undergoing allergen immunotherapy and studies show that it is useful, the cost-benefit ratios and risk-benefit are not always favorable.

Some individuals and some allergies tend to respond better than others.
Immunotherapy is most often used for people allergic to pollens, house dust mites, insect venoms and animal dander. Immunotherapy for patients with food allergy is generally not advisable because of the risk of anaphylaxis.

The procedure is most effective when injections are applied during maintenance.
Generally, treatment is initially administered once a week. Most individuals can continue with maintenance injections every 4 to 6 weeks.
Since adverse reactions may occur after an injection immunotherapy, the physician must insist that the patient remain in the clinic for at least 20 minutes after the procedure.
São possible symptoms of an allergic reaction sneezing, coughing, flushing, tingling sensation, itching, tightness in chest, wheezing and hives
When there are mild symptoms, medication (typically an antihistamine, such) can help block the allergic reaction. The most serious reactions require an injection of epinephrine (adrenaline).
Antihistamines are drugs commonly used to treat allergies (they are not used in the treatment of asthma.)
