How Does Thermage work?
What is Thermage?
Thermage is a non- surgical medical procedure that is used to tighten and lift skin that is wrinkled, prone to acne and acne scars or suffers from major pigmentation. It is majorly used for the face but is also applicable to the eyelids, backs of hands, neck, chest etc. it is primarily done to lift loose skin and give it a youthful, fuller glow and texture.
How does it work?
Thermage as a procedure uses radiation or radiofrequency to create a heating effect in the deep dermis. This allows the existing collagen to tighten and new collagen to be produced. This gradual contraction and tightening of collagen is responsible for the lifting of skin.
During the treatment, a brief sensation of heat is felt each time the radiation is applied. A cooling cryogen is used to address that sensation. In case, there is discomfort of any sort, the doctor or nurse or operator should be alerted immediately. Now Thermage treatments in Singapore are absolutely pain free.
Results and Effects:
Usually, the response is gradual although some people do react to it quite quickly. That depends upon the skin type and the extent of pigmentation, wrinkling or acne. Studies depict an increase in collagen for sure after treatment but some patients take as long as 6 months for noticeable results to be seen. Often, in cases of extreme skin problems, the procedure might just not work, but that is to be expected.
Immediately after treatment, one can return to one’s normal activities. Make- up can also be applied although a little redness might be visible for patients who have more sensitive skin. That usually disappears in a matter of hours. Mild swelling might appear but should go away in a few days. Bruising and scarring are very rare after the procedure.
Usually, the effects last for two years or so but some patients who respond positively, can also see lasting effects for more than that. As with most skin restorative techniques, the original condition is bound to return after that.
Although, this procedure is relatively free from damaging side- effects, the possibility for the same does exist as it does for any operative technique that makes use of radiation. Slight reddening of skin or temporary swelling are normal side- effects that dissipate in some time. A crust or scab might develop but it is usually superficial and does not result in permanent scarring.
Sometimes, small indentations might occur that are not visible and heal in some time. Very rarely are these indentations permanent. Also, some patients complain of altered sensation or frequent tingling of skin which usually gets resolved within a week and is a rare occurrence in itself.
