Generic Imitrex – Treat Migraine Headaches

Generic Imitrex is a medication that is used for the treatment of migraine. The medicine is not used to prevent episodes of migraine, but to reduce headache that is ongoing. The pharmacological action of this drug is on brain chemical called serotonin. The active ingredient of Generic Imitrex is Sumatriptan. It belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin receptor agonists. The primary mechanism of this ingredient is to narrow the blood vessels and block the transmission of pain signals to the brain.

I. Things to Remember Before Using Generic Imitrex

The doctor must be aware of your medical history before he prescribes you Generic Imitrex. Discuss the risks of the medicine if you are having or have had conditions like liver diseases, epilepsy, hypertension, kidney disease, coronary heart disease or arrhythmia.

Generic Imitrex is to be avoided if you suffer from blood circulation issues, uncontrolled blood pressure, ischemic bowel disease or a severe liver disease. The medicine is also not taken if any type of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor is used by you recently. It is advisable that you first discuss the risks of the medicine with your healthcare advisor, if you are suffering from any of the above or other health complications.

The effect of this drug on the fetus is not known. Pregnant women should first consult their doctor before taking Generic Imitrex. Breast-feeding mothers should also talk with their physician before using the medication as it may cause harm to the nursing baby.

II. How is Generic Imitrex Taken?

Generic Imitrex should be taken only after getting a proper prescription from a medical advisor. You should take the drug as instructed by the healthcare expert. The medicine is to be taken as soon as the headache starts. Usually the physician will ask you take the first dose of Generic Imitrex in a hospital setting. This is done to check if any severe adverse effects are occurring.

You should drink at least one full glass of water after taking Generic Imitrex. It is advisable that you do not cut the tablet in two before using this drug. If the headache does not subside after taking one tablet, wait for at least two hours before you take the second one. Usually the dosing is based on the severity of your condition. Generally, the dosing consists of taking a single tablet of 25 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg. However, remember that more than 200 mg should not be taken within a span of 24 hours. If the headache still persists after taking the medicine, consult the prescribing physician.

Generic Imitrex is also availed in a nasal spray form. If you are using the nasal spray, blow your nose before using the medicine. Try not to blow the nose after using the nasal spray. If the headache does not go away after using the spray, use the nasal spray after two hours have passed. In a day, more than 40 mg of the spray should not be used. Call your medical advisor if no improvement is seen in your symptoms. The medicine is to be kept away from children. You should store Generic Imitrex away from exposure to sunlight and moisture.

III. Warnings

You should keep in mind not to give Generic Imitrex to a person who has not been prescribed this medicine, even if the person is suffering from the same condition as you. Taking the medicine without a prescription could worsen the condition. You should not take Generic Imitrex in higher quantities than prescribed. Overusing the medicine can cause the headache to worsen.

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that could happen when using the drug. It is usually characterized by irregular breathing, wheezing, swelling of skin, puffiness of the eyelids and/or fainting. You should immediately call the physician if these reactions are felt by you. It is better that you first consult your medical advisor before taking any other OTC or herbal medications.

Side effects of Generic Imitrex are headache (not migraine attack), dizziness, sleepiness, vomiting, irritation in the throat or nose and unusual aftertaste usually after the nasal spray is used, drooling, redness of the skin, nausea etc. Some severe side effects of the drug are chest pain, slurred speech or blurry vision, severe pain in stomach, convulsions, bleeding during loose motions etc. You must get immediate medical support if these or other unwanted side effects are experienced.
