Gaining Support Online in cancer treatment

Jan 25th 2015 at 7:22 AM

Going through cancer treatment is difficult for everyone involved - the patient, as well as their loved ones, especially those who are providing care for their patient on a regular basis. Support is essential in allowing people to do what they need to do with a healthy mind and spirit as they work towards gaining physical health for themselves or their loved one.

Just as cancer care includes a variety of medical services designed to address and treat each patient’s specific cancer diagnosis, such care also includes ancillary “treatments” meant to address all facets of physical and emotional care to help optimize each patient’s chance of success - including nutritional and emotional support. Patients - and even their caregivers and loved ones - are encouraged by doctors to join and participate in a support group that will allow them to become connected with others going through a similar experience.

There are a variety of reasons that many people may not take advantage of the support groups available to them; reasons that may include a lack of time, logistical inconvenience, and maybe even a discomfort with being in a group setting. However, the benefits of a support group are such that finding a way to participate in whatever way is convenient and comfortable for you can be life-changing for many people.

Luckily, in this modern world there is now the option of “attending” support groups online where you can still make the crucial connection with people who will understand what you are going through from the comfort of your own home. Through online support groups, those undergoing treatment for cancer - or those who are providing those patients with the crucial support they need - are able to find solace, emotional support, camaraderie, friendship, and hope through the technology that delivers it right into their living room.

Now there’s no excuse for not getting involved in a support group of some kind. A group that can provide you unwavering support and a lifeline to a light in an often dark tunnel is just a click away.
