Five Signs You May Have a Heart Condition

Nov 19th 2015 at 10:13 PM

The more that doctors and scientists learn about the heart, the more we know that it is a complicated organ that works together with a number of systems in the body to keep blood flowing. This complexity means that any number of different symptoms may indicate a heart condition. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms below, you should consult your doctor to determine whether a heart condition may be at play.

Chest discomfort is the most common symptom of a heart attack or other heart malady. Heart attack pain may feel different for each individual, with some describing it as a pressure similar to an elephant sitting on your chest. Others experience a burning sensation or pinching. Pain that is fleeting and quickly dissipates is less likely to represent a heart problem. If the pain lasts for more than a few minutes, it may represent a serious heart issue.

Other signs include stomach discomfort such as nausea, indigestion or heartburn. Women commonly experience these symptoms with a heart attackrather than the more familiar chest discomfort. Of course, stomach problems may be caused by a myriad of non-heart related ailments. However, if it is a feeling that comes on quickly or feels different than you normally experience, consult a physician immediately.

Pain that starts in your chest and spreads to other areas of your body may indicate a heart attack or other condition. A heart attack may be signaled by pain that radiates down your left arm, or by pain that spreads from your chest to your throat or neck area. If you experience pain that is unfamiliar and radiates from your chest to other areas, you should consider consulting a physician.

Heart arrhythmias- heart conditions caused by irregular heartbeats- are signaled by fluttering in the chest, irregular heartbeat that is either too fast or too slow, and dizziness or light headedness. Heart arrhythmias should be examined and discussed with your doctor.

Migraines may also indicate a heart condition in some individuals. Like most symptoms, migraines have a variety of causes, but there is a significant correlation between migraines and cardiovascular problems. While only 12% of the total population is said to experience migraines, of those individuals with diagnosed heart conditions the percentage that experience migraines jumps to 40%. If you experience migraines it is worthwhile to discuss with your doctor whether a heart condition may be present.

Heart conditions, like most other illnesses, may be indicated by a number of symptoms. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, it may be prudent to discuss them with your doctor and have tests done. Visit this website to learn more about EKG testing in San Diego.
