Diabetic hyperosmolar coma

Diabetic hyperosmolar coma or neatsidoticheskaya - a dangerous condition characterized by a sharp increase in blood glucose levels, severe dehydration and lack of signs of ketoacidosis . It occurs mainly in older people suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Coma may be recovering from recent surgery, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, infection, poor diabetes control and serious chronic diseases.

The use of certain medications, such as diuretics which increase urination may lead to dehydration and from diabetic hyperosmolar coma.

Why there is hyperosmolar coma .

In normal condition, the kidneys help control glucose, releasing excessive amounts in the urine. However, when there is dehydration, the kidneys try to save water by reducing urine production. Therefore, excessive sugar can not be allocated and increase in blood flow.

In the case of a hyperosmolar coma, the blood glucose level may reach or exceed 55.0 mmol / l. High concentrations of glucose and sodium in body fluids increase their osmolarity.

Signs of hyperosmolar coma.

Early symptoms develop gradually, increased thirst and / or excessive urination. As the condition worsens, manifested drowsiness, decreased consciousness,

restlessness, lethargy, confusion, fatigue, partial paralysis, headaches, difficulty in speech, palpitations, low blood pressure, nausea, slow muscle function, and may be followed by convulsions.   

Treatment of diabetic hyperosmolar coma.

This condition must be treated immediately, because it may be fatal. In most cases, hospitalization is necessary, as the need for intravenous therapy. Normal blood glucose and electrolyte balance should be restored immediately.

Complications coma.

As already mentioned, if not treated in time hyperglycemia, it can be extremely dangerous. Mortality reached 40%. Formation of a blood clot, brain swelling, acute vascular insufficiency and increased acidity of the blood - the most common and serious complications .
