Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – A Better Solution for Depression Than Killer Drugs

For any depression sufferer, the options for treatment are psychotherapy or antidepressants. Antidepressant being beneficial in some cases but psychotherapy has lesser risks. The effectiveness and safety for both options depend on the sufferer and their personal conditions.


Psychotherapy or talk therapy helps depression sufferer understand the disorder and assist them to cope with it. It equips the sufferer with useful strategies and knowledge on how to manage, if not over come, unhealthy behavior and thoughts. The main objective of the psychotherapy is to make patients manage to behave well in society and to live in the most normal manner possible. Sometimes it alone can be the perfect treatment, said by the National Institute For Mental Treatment, however depending on the case and its severity, often it is combine with medication.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is a type of treatment which is considered to be the most effective treatment in eliminating or at least reducing depression and anxiety disorders. CBT is actually the combination of behavioral and cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy concentrates on a person’s beliefs and thoughts and how these influence on sufferer’s actions and mood.


CBT aligns the sufferer’s thoughts to be more healthy and adaptive, focusing on their behavior and aim to alter unhealthy behavioral patterns. As reported by National Alliance on Mental Health, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is useful in the treating psychotic disorder, mood disorder, personality disorder, eating disorder and substance abuse disorder.

In most cases CBT is observed to be as successful as antidepressant or SSRIs and is far better in preventing deterioration. For this treatment, it is necessary that patient is ready to share her or his worries, fears, and problems openly. In some cases patients find it difficult to express their emotions and often they are closed up in their shell. This is the very reason, most if not all of them choose to take antidepressant medication to be prescribed to them.

Antidepressants drugs like Zoloft, Paxil, and Prozac are always open to controversy because of their killer side effects. These killer side effect include birth injuries, autism, suicidal behavior, and breast cancer even. Whether it is psychotherapy or taking antidepressants, both options must be supplemented with an extra program of therapy like music or exercise therapy. These treatments are intended to give maximum assistance to the sufferer.
