hypertensionIf you're having trouble keeping your blood pressure in check, consume more cocoa it may be of help: according to a recent study by the Cochrane Library , the intake of bitter chocolate , which increased concentration of cacao has in its formula, pure- or in default of supplements containing between 30 and 1080 milligrams of flavanols , lowered blood pressure.

For this research analyzed some 20 studies involving 856 people , whose traces were of 2-8 weeks. People who consumed these products had achieved lower your blood pressure. According to experts, the key to such beneficial effect of cocoa is in flavanols .
These are substances responsible for the formation of nitric oxide , having itself a relaxation effect on the walls of blood vessels which leads to a drop in blood pressure.

Karin Ried, specialist in charge of public health research, said the improvement in blood pressure in these individuals was observed in the short term (the period of time covered in these studies).
" Although we have no evidence that low blood pressure long term, this reduction in the short term could make the flavanols serve as a complement to other treatments and thus help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease , "added the specialist .
Ried said that it would be valuable to begin studies analyzing the effects of cocoa on blood pressure in the long term, where the impact these substances, flavanols, may have on the risk of developing heart disease or accidents cerebrovascualres is included, and possible adverse effects of long-term consumption.

Anyway, the specialist said that the flavanols could well serve as a complement to traditional medical treatments.
