Causes Of Diabetes And Role Of Diabetic Meal Plans In Diabetes Management

Aug 13th 2014 at 6:59 PM

Before we discuss different causes of diabetes and its dietary recommendations, we should understand what diabetes is. Diabetes is nothing but body’s inability to produce or utilize available insulin for generation of energy.

Our pancreas produce a very important hormone ‘insulin’. It is produced as a response to food consumption and plays a vital role in transporting different nutrients to cells.

Lack of insulin leads to excess sugar in blood. High levels of sugar can potentially harm different organs as well as systems.

Body has its own mechanism of getting surplus sugar in blood by producing excess urine. This explains why diabetics need to urinate more frequently. Feeling thirsty all the time is considered to be one of the symptoms of diabetes.

Since a diabetic patient’s body is not able to utilize available calories, he or she experiences hunger as well as tiredness very often.

Hence, the primary goal of diabetes treatment is to keep blood sugar level under check.

Causative factors with respect to Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are also referred to as juvenile onset and maturity onset diabetes, respectively, due to different periods of commencement.

In Type 1 diabetes, beta cells are not able to function. Since beta cells are responsible for controlling insulin secretion, the entire process of energy production by utilization of sugar gets hampered.

One of the major causes of diabetes is immunity dysfunction. Immunity is designed to protect us from the foreign bodies, such as bacteria and other pathogens.

Due to unknown reasons, the body’s immunity starts attacking itself in auto immune disorders including diabetes. This is the primary cause of Type 1 diabetes.

A vast majority of diabetic patients suffer from Type 2 diabetes. It accounts for more than 95 percent of diabetic cases. Being overweight is one of the risk factors of Type 2 diabetes, hence it is also termed as overweight maturity onset diabetes.

Age is also an important risk factor, since Type 2 diabetes shows up after 45 years of age. This is in sharp contrast to Type 1, which commences at a young age.

There has been a lot of discussion regarding syndrome X in terms of diabetic risk factors. If a person is leading a stressful lifestyle, central obesity, and high blood pressure, then there is increased risk of diabetes.

Significance of diabetes diet

Diabetic meal plans are designed to maintain adequate sugar levels and reduce weight, since weight management is one of the most important goals of diabetic treatment.

People who are diagnosed with overweight maturity onset diabetes must follow an organized lifestyle that consists of regular meals, exercise, and stress management measures.

Diet that includes high levels of carbohydrates and fats should be strictly avoided. Alcohol consumption contributes to high calorie intake and should be avoided as far as possible.

Family history is the most important risk factor. If you have a family history of diabetes, then you must check your blood sugar levels periodically and avoid weight gain, hypertension, and sedentary lifestyle.

Ethnic aspects are also notable risk factors, since it is found that certain ethnic groups such as Asians are at a greater risk.
