Cardiovascular Disease- Things to Know.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are diseases of the heart and blood vessels. They are:
- Heart attacks
- Heart failure
- Congenital heart disease
- Peripheral artery disease
They are the number 1 cause of deaths globally, 17.5 million die each year. Strokes and heart attacks take most of these lives.
Cause-When there is a build up of fatty deposits on the inner walls of the blood vessels, the vessels become narrow with hardening of the arteries.
The hardening causes a blockage of the blood supply to the heart and the brain with damage to these organs.
The causes of these fatty deposits have been identified as:
- Tobacco use
- Physical inactivity
- Unhealthy eating
Once present these risk factors may appear as high blood pressure, raised blood cholesterol or high glucose levels.
Smoking cessation reduces the chances of the person having a heart attack.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has set out guidelines with actions to reduce the number of premature deaths by CVD.
This Day is World Heart Day- September 26.
There are many health resources like this patient health education to help people take care of their health and prevent diseases like cardiovascular disease.
