Cancer Screening: When Should It Begin?

Apr 9th 2015 at 5:56 AM

Early detection of cancer is critical for increasing the odds for survival. That’s a given that most people keenly understand. What they don’t necessarily understand is exactly when screenings for different forms of the disease should begin. After all, there are a number of different cancers that demand attention and prevention alike.

Fortunately, the American Cancer Society offers some advice that can help men and women keep screening recommendations straight. Keep in mind that some recommendations apply to both men and women, but others are gender specific. Here are the standard guidelines for screenings for some of the most common types of cancer:

· Breast Cancer – Annual mammograms are recommended for women starting around the age of 40. Clinical breast exams should be conducted about once every three years for women in the 20s and 30. Self-exams are worth performing regularly at all ages.

· Colorectal cancer – Screening for this form of the disease is typically recommended around the age of 50 for both men and women.

· Cervical cancer – Pap tests are recommended for women once every three years between the ages of 21 and 29. Between 30 and 65, the recommendation is to have a Pap test plus an HPV test once every five years. After the age of 65, those who have had normal cervical cancer screenings in the past will find the need for further testing may be eliminated.

· Prostate cancer – Starting around the age of 50, men may want to consider going in for routine screening that includes a digital rectal exam and PSA blood test.

Keep in mind there are a number of other cancers that people, depending on their personal risk factors, may also need to undergo screening for. It’s important to discuss this topic with a physician to get the best possible advice based on the individual in question.
