Can Bariatric Surgery Help With Asthma?

May 29th 2015 at 2:23 AM

Obesity is a concern for more than 1 in 3 American adults and an estimated one-third of children ages 6 to 19. While it is commonly associated with such conditions as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes, it may also take its toll on asthmatics. By exacerbating this breathing condition, obesity is linked with more frequent attacks and more frequent hospitalizations. Studies are showing, however, that bariatric surgery can in fact help asthmatics reduce their number of hospitalizations.

The latest research was recently published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. While past research on nonsurgical weight loss and asthma control showed only modest results, researchers have found the more permanent solution afforded by bariatric surgery is producing results.

To determine the connection between weight loss surgery and reduced asthma hospitalizations, researchers pulled data from three states – California, Nebraska and Florida. Participants were aged 18 to 54 who had undergone bariatric surgery. The study covered a multi-month period following surgery with pre-surgical months used as a reference. During the pre-surgical reference period, about 22 percent of patients had an emergency room trip or hospitalization due to asthma exacerbation. The number of trips following bariatric procedures, however, dropped dramatically, researchers found, with even further reduction 13 to 24 months out from surgery.

Addressing obesity in a safe, effective and permanent way can have positive effects on overall health status. It may reduce the risks of heart disease, diabetes and certain forms of cancer while reducing symptoms associated with asthma and other chronic illnesses. People who are obese are urged to consult with their personal physicians for the best recommendations in their case. Weight loss surgery may provide an option for relief when diet and exercise alone are not producing desired results. It is, however, important for people to research their options and ensure that other measures are exhausted before surgical intervention takes place.
