An Ounce of Prevention…
Scars are an ugly after-effect of accidents and necessary surgery. No one likes them, and there are many new techniques to remove them. Lasers are like the new ‘magic wand’ for a myriad of unwanted skin defects and issues.
We are lucky. We live in an age where technology and highly-trained plastic and cosmetic surgeons can fix nearly anything. But, here’s a new way to look at it – What if there were surgical methods that could leave virtually NO visible scar?
Utilizing the da Vinci Si Robotic Surgical System, Regional Medical Center of San Jose will become the first hospital in the Bay Area (and one of the first nationwide) to perform a single-incision operation to remove a patient’s gallbladder through the belly button. Prior to the development of this method, removal of a patient’s gall bladder has been performed through open surgery. This requires a large opening and multiple incisions, or laparoscopic surgery.
According to Mike Johnson, CEO of Regional Medical Center of San Jose, “This exciting new technology paired with our highly trained doctors and operating room staff means better surgical outcomes for our patients. Not only will this surgical procedure be safer and less invasive, the recovery period is significantly reduced and there will be virtually no visible scar from the single incision through the umbilical.”
This is great news. As researchers continue to develop surgical methods that leave the least amount of scarring; we only need to worry about fixing those that we already have. When considering any surgery, discuss the possibility and placement of incisions and methods of closure. For those scars that already exist, schedule a consultation with a reputable scar removal expert.
