Acid Reflux, How I overcame the 'MONSTER'

Aug 6th 2010 at 7:03 AM

I'm the guy.  You know the guy that was always complaining.  The guy that couldn't eat Mexican or Chinese or Italian or Moms home cooking.  You know the guy that was a pain in the a-- anytime everyone was deciding where to go eat.  Yeah, that's me, I'm the guy.

Or should I say I used to be that guy.  Not only was I miserable but I made everyone around me miserable as well. It was a very serious problem, and for me years of misery that could have been prevented.  Let me share how I finally got rid of my acid reflux.

Starting about 1994 I started getting severe heart burn about 1 to 11/2 hours after eating.  This happened about 1 or 2 times a week, and Alka seltzer or Tums were enough to treat it.  However as time went on the pain and discomfort became more and more intense.  I am also the guy, you know, that doesn't like to go to Doctors,  I know, I know, "Physician heal thyself".   Any way I finally went and they put me on a bland diet, no food after 7:00 pm, stay away from red meat, blah, blah, blah, bl, well you get the picture.  To be succinct "It did not work". So the next step was, you guessed it, a magical prescription,  $XX.XX dollars a month and to say the least the results were in a word, Dismal. Nothing would kill the monster.  I walked the floor at night, had my bed elevated, bought special pillows, ate the diet, did exercise and literally tried everything that I knew or anything anyone else told me might work.  I was in pain constantly, and I am talking morning noon and night.  I popped the pills, drank the chalk,,ate tums like candy and I still hurt...

Then I had an amazing conversation with a Lady I barely knew.  At first I thought she was flirting with me.  She was looking deep into my eyes, and I do mean deep and then she asked could she touch me!  Well, I was kind of flustered, you see my wife, Deborah was sitting right there next to me, I didn't know exactly how to respond and sensing my unease this Lady laughed.  She said that she practiced a diagnostic technique that was called Iridology and she had been studying my eyes and just wanted to make sure she was seeing what she thought she saw.  Talk about egg on your face, Whew.  Any way to make an already long story longer.  She started telling me, yes I said telling me, what medical problems I was experiencing.

She knew I had acid reflux, diabetes type II and suffered from pancreatitis.  I was blown away, not only had I never heard of Iridology but would have thought it was 'hocus pocus'.  But she had nailed it.  Then she said "How would you like to cure your acid reflux?"  My answer of course was "Are you crazy? Sure.  But first can you tell me how many grandchildren I'll have or maybe who's going to win the Super Bowl?"  She just laughed and proceeded to give me this advice.

She said that in some cases, some not all, the problem is not related to the Lower Esophageal Sphincter not closing all the way.  Sometime the problem is that the body, my body, is too acidic.  My PH was to low and there were thing that I could do to make my body more basic.  Well I took chemistry and now she was talking my language.  Before I share with you what I did to correct my problem, it might be beneficial here to answer the question, What is Acid Reflux? This is pretty comprehensive, but I think helpful.

At the entrance to your stomach is a valve, which is a ring of muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Normally, the LES closes as soon as food passes through it. If the LES doesn't close all the way or if it opens too often, acid produced by your stomach can move up into your esophagus. This can cause symptoms such as a burning chest pain called heartburn. If acid reflux symptoms happen more than twice a week, you have acid reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

What causes acid reflux disease?

One common cause of acid reflux disease is a stomach abnormality called a hiatal hernia. This occurs when the upper part of the stomach and LES move above the diaphragm, a muscle that separates your stomach from your chest. Normally, the diaphragm helps keep acid in our stomach. But if you have a hiatal hernia, acid can move up into your esophagus and cause symptoms of acid reflux disease.

These are other common risk factors for acid reflux disease:

Eating large meals or lying down right after a meal

Being overweight or obese

Eating a heavy meal and lying on your back or bending over at the waist

Snacking close to bedtime

Eating certain foods, such as citrus, tomato, chocolate, mint, garlic, onions, or spicy or fatty foods

Drinking certain beverages, such as alcohol, carbonated drinks, coffee, or tea

Being pregnant

Taking aspirin, ibuprofen, certain muscle relaxers, or blood pressure medications

What are the symptoms of acid reflux disease?

Common symptoms of acid reflux are:

Heartburn -- a burning pain or discomfort that may move from your stomach to your abdomen or chest, or even up into your throat

Regurgitation -- a sour or bitter-tasting acid backing up into your throat or mouth

Other symptoms of acid reflux disease include:

Bloody or black stools or bloody vomiting

Dysphagia -- a narrowing of your esophagus, which creates the sensation of food being stuck in your throat

Hiccups that don't let up

Weight loss for no known reason

Wheezing, dry cough, hoarseness, or chronic sore throat

Whew.  Notice that it says 'one common cause' Well, there are other causes and a low PH was mine.   Once I adjusted the PH of my body within 3 months my acid reflux and the pain associated with it was gone.  "Praise the LORD!"

I also lost some weight, about 60 pounds, made sure that I exercise, mostly I walk.  But as far a food goes I can eat anything that I want to eat.

Thank you for letting me share my story with you.  If you would like to know exactly what I did to adjust my PH,  just message me and I will share that with you as well.

To your Great Success and Health
