About multiple sclerosis and treatment measures

May 19th 2015 at 12:43 AM

Multiple sclerosis is a medical condition involving central nervous system. In patients suffering from this disorder, have coating around the nerve fibers known as myelin damaged. This damage leads to a range of symptoms that helps in the identification of the disease. Once diagnosed, a patient has to remain with it for the life. Only a little is known about this condition, research is still going on to know more about this health condition.

It is more like an immune mediated process. Central nervous system or CNS is composed of spinal cord, brain and optic nerves. In MS, abnormal response of the body’s immune system is focused against CNS. The particular antigen or target that immune cells are sensitized to remains unknown. For this reason, some medical professionals take it as "immune-mediated" rather than "autoimmune."

· The immune system attacks myelin – a fatty substance surrounding and insulating the nerve fibers – as well as the nerve fibers.

· Damaged myelin develops scar tissues or sclerosis from which the disease derives its name.

· When any part of nerve fiber or myelin sheath is damaged, the nerve impulse commuting through brain and spinal cord is interrupted. This produces a wide range of symptoms.

· Some findings suggest that the disease is triggered in genetically susceptible individuals with one or more environmental factors working on it.

· MS patients typically experience one of four disease courses which may range from mild, moderate to severe.

MS and medical marijuana

Patients with MS have experienced some relief in symptoms with medical marijuana. Multiple sclerosis treatment with marijuana may alleviate symptoms like depression, anxiety, pain, spasticity, and ataxia. Some clinical trials and case studies on the use of medical marijuana by MS patients have supported this result. In fact, some studies also suggest that marijuana may slow neuro-degeneration in MS.

There are four recognized courses of disease progression - Primary-Progressive MS, Progressive-Relapsing MS, Relapsing-Remitting MS, and Secondary-Progressive MS. Patients with any course may experience symptoms from mild to moderate and severe. Depending on the severity, the patients may come across various levels of disability and degeneration. Some patients may even need wheelchair for mobility.

Some patients with MS prefer medical marijuana as the best aid to alleviate symptoms. However, using this as a multiple sclerosis treatment requires you to have sound knowledge of laws regarding marijuana use in your state. There are many medical marijuana providers but not all are authorized to do so. So make sure to reach the right place and make use of it while remaining confined under the law.
