This is a slightly more controversial diet option than I typically recommend for fat loss, but as with anything controversial, some people claim that this diet carries significant benefits while others doubt its efficacy. With that said, there is no harm to come from it, so try out the diet yourself to judge whether you think it is effective or not.
With that out of the way, a fruit fast can be an excellent way to lose excess fat. The diet is low in calories, high in vitamins, and packed full up fiber so that you feel full even though you are on a severe calorie restriction. http://generalhealths2014.weebly.com/1/post/2014/01/health-benefits-of-islands-and-its-importance-for-children.html
The diet is extremely simple to follow. Just eat fruit, especially citrus fruits and melons, as much and as often as you like. And for the most part, avoid non-fruit foods. Absolutely don’t eat anything cooked or that has a package. That’s it.
dieting Significant Benefits
The first, and most significant, benefit of the fruit fast is weight loss. In fact, some people claim that you can lose as many as ten pounds in one week. As Kathleen M. Zelman, weight loss expert at WebMD explains it:
The diet provides about 900-1,000 calories each day, with about 100-125 grams of protein on day one and about 50 grams of protein on the other two days, depending on the type of protein powder you use.
When you think about it in these terms, a significant degree of weight loss makes sense, as the diet has essentially no fat, and half to a third the calories of the typical American diet. Additionally, there is essentially no sodium in the diet, which means that your body will retain much less water. It is safe to assume that half the weight you lose at first will be due to reduced water retention.
In addition to weight loss, the diet carries with it significant other physical benefits. Fructose, the sugar in fruit, is generally considered to be the easiest food for your body to digest, so by eating only fruit for several days at a time, you are giving your digestive system a chance to rest, and giving your body a chance to rid itself of toxins that have accumulated within from years of eating processed food.
A Couple Pieces of Advice
A couple of quick things bear mentioning in regards to the fruit fast. First, while I am a huge proponent of this diet for a couple of days at a time, it is by no means a long term diet. It lacks sodium, fat, sufficient protein, minerals, and a host of other nutrients that your body needs for healthy functioning. Lona Sandon, a Dallas dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, describes the risks in a bit more detail.
Long-term fasts lead to muscle breakdown and a shortage of many needed nutrients… [and can] actually weaken the body’s ability to fight infections and inflammation,” she says.
Additionally, while the initial weight loss can be a huge boost to your self esteem, understand that you will, without a doubt, regain some of this weight when you return to a ‘normal’ diet. This is completely normal. Once you start taking in sodium again, your body will start to retain more water, as you should. This does not mean that you are putting the fat back on that you lost during the diet.
Rather, the most effective way to use this diet is as a springboard into a healthier lifestyle. After a several-day fruit fast, take your gains and walk away from the diet, but keep the core concepts. Continue eating a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and plenty of vitamins and minerals. In this way you will set yourself up not only for long-term fat loss, but just long- term health in general.
