3 Signs You May Be Having a Heart Attack

Oct 1st 2015 at 12:11 AM

Heart attacks rarely come on without warning, and understanding the signs can help people know when they should get help from a medical professional.

Heart disease is a serious issue for many Americans today, but many others may not realize what they should be looking for in order to seek early medical care before a heart attack. Knowing the warning signs may be able to help you prevent a serious episode. Many assume that a heart attack comes on quickly, without any signs that something is wrong, but in reality mild pain and discomfort can come on slowly, signaling that you should get help as soon as possible.

One of the most common symptoms, and the one that most people associate with heart attack, is chest pain. The level of discomfort that you may experience can vary, but it will be centered in the middle of the chest. Sometimes the pain lasts for longer than a minute, while other times it may go away and then return again. The discomfort that you may experience could feel like squeezing, pressure, fullness or full on pain. Some people may have pain that feels more like heartburn or indigestion. No matter what your chest discomfort feels like, it is a good idea to seek medical attention as quickly as possible.

The entire body can show signs of an impending heart attack, but the upper body especially may react. If you notice soreness or discomfort of the neck, arms, upper back, jaw, shoulders or upper stomach, your body may be telling you that something is wrong. Most people know that pain in one arm can be a sign that a heart attack is coming, but both arms can hurt, as well as practically any body part above the belly button.

Some people also experience shortness of breath. This symptom can occur on its own, or in conjunction with any of the above-mentioned signs. The inability to catch your breath can happen when you are resting or when you are being physically active. Women are more likely to experience this symptom, along with unusual tiredness that can last for several days or profuse sweating.

Catching the signs of a heart attack early can mean the difference between life and death in some situations. These common symptoms, along with others including nausea, dizziness, or anxiety, should be taken seriously. The pattern of symptoms that you experience may change, growing stronger or lasting for a longer period of time. When this happens, it is especially important to seek medical care.
