Social phobia is a serious condition

Dec 5th 2013 at 2:37 AM

This finding suggests that social phobia is a serious condition. Researchers questioned 10.123 million American teens and 6,483 parents about levels of anxiety, shyness and use of prescription drugs. We also assessed whether the teens had social phobia.

Parents were more likely to judge their children as shy teens themselves: while 62.4% said that their children are shy, only 46.7% of teenagers described themselves them that way. What The Users Say:

Of the students who were shy, 12.4% were diagnosed with social phobia.

Among young people described as shy by their parents, 10.6% had a phobia. Among adolescents identified as not shy, only 5% met the criteria for social phobia.

In contrast to the high frequency of shyness observed among U.S. adolescents, social phobia affects a minority of young people.

Teenagers who fall into this condition reported more social struggles and more psychological disorders than youths who are simply shy. This shows that social phobia should be taken seriously.

Although many teenagers realize the problem and its losses, the majority do not seek professional help.

The severity of the disease shows that shyness sometimes must let parents and young people on alert.
