Postural Assessment is of Great Importance for Sports Activities

Dec 29th 2015 at 3:47 AM

To understand the concept of postural assessment the first thing on which one needs to have a clear idea is the meaning of posture. To put it in simple words, posture is the relationship between different parts of the body and its assessment is basically observation of the relationship between the body parts. Many of the times it is seen that people experience dysfunctions in the body muscles or joints due to incorrect postures. In fact, it is incorrect postures that cause pain in the body. Hence it is recommended that once in a while it is a good idea to undergo assessment of one’s posture. It can be a great way to eliminate pains prevailing in the body. At the same time, good assessment of the posture also enhances one’s performance in a sports activity like running or swimming.

Here it must be noted that in case one engages in postural assessment of the client it should be done with care and proper information should be gained before practicing the skill. This is important because unless an informed assessment is done, it will not bring about the desired results among clients. Assessment of one’s posture is neither a complex nor a time consuming process. The only thing that is required is careful observation. A useful tip here would be that carrying out assessment of one’s own posture could be a great idea before practicing with others. However, whenever such assessments are carried out it is necessary that it is done with the clients’ consent and in a warm environment. It is also important that the assessment is carried out keeping in mind all the checklists.

Biomechanical assessment is also part of assessing the posture of an individual. It is basically an investigation of lower limb function of an individual. The aim of the investigation is to find any sort of abnormalities and compensations in the lower limb area. It is such a kind of assessment that helps in detecting the cause of pains in the heel, ankle, knee and also sometimes pain in the back regions. The advantage of detecting the cause of the pain is that it helps the expert devise a tailor made treatment strategy for a person. This is because every individual has different postures and the causes are also different from one another. Generally, such an assessment takes more than an hour and the whole process is undertaken by a qualified Podiatrist.

There are two kinds of biomechanical assessment that generally takes place. One is the static assessment and the other is the dynamic assessment. In the static assessment the things that happen are a non-weight bearing complete anatomical examination of an individual, testing of the muscle and the weight bearing examination of the lower limb. On the other hand, the dynamic assessment comprises a video analysis of the overall gait of a person and also the pressure plate analysis. Last but not the least, it is important that a good and qualified practitioner is employed for all assessments related to postures of an individual. For more information visit :
