Breast Cancer Risk Factors Women Can Control
An estimated one in eight women will receive a diagnosis of breast cancer at some point in their lifetimes. While preventing this disease is not always possible due to risk factors well beyond a woman’s control, there are some risks that can be mitigated to increase a woman’s chances of remaining breast cancer free throughout life.
Here are just a few of the steps women can take to lower their chances of developing breast cancer:
· Reducing alcohol consumption – Regular alcohol consumption has been linked to a higher risk for development of breast and other forms of cancer. Cutting consumption down to one drink a day or less can reduce the risks.
· Losing weight – Obesity after menopause increases breast cancer risk, as well. Maintaining a healthy weight can make a difference in helping prevent this disease and many others. Regular diet should be low in fat and high in fruits and vegetables.
· Getting active – There is an increasing body of evidence that shows physical activity can lower breast cancer risk. While it is unclear just how much exercise is required to lower chances, it is recommended that at least 1.25 hours of exercise is incorporated into the weekly routine. Before starting an exercise routine be sure to consult with a physician.
· Quitting smoking – While the scientific jury is still out on this potential risk factor’s role in breast cancer development enough evidence exists to suggest quitting smoking is the right move to make. Not only can it potentially lower breast cancer risk, it can also assist with improving overall health.
Preventing breast cancer is not always possible, but there are steps women can take to lower their chances. It is recommended that women work closely with their physicians to identify their personal risk factors. Routine physical exams, including a baseline mammogram at age 35 and annual mammograms after 40, are also critical.
