What Are Puffy Eyes?

Puffy eyes are a situation where eye begin to swell. Naturally, the skin around the eyes is very sensitive. Often, puffy eyes will resolve without medications or also after applying some basic home treatments.

Who Gets Puffy Eyes?

Sometimes, people who take a lot of alcohol and sodium before going to bed may wake in the morning with puffy eyes mainly because of water retention. Due to stress, your body might become weak and therefore become susceptible to problems such as swelling. In some instances, puffy eyes are a symptom of suffering from conditions such as blepharitis, inflammation of the eyelids and base of the eyelashes.

Puffy/swollen eyes are caused by a number of factors such as allergies, fluid retention, hormone changes, stress and other factors.  When a person cries, eyes become swollen because the tiny glands located in the eyelids become inflamed from overactivity. Sleeping can also cause puffy eyes. Additional causes of puffy eyes may include:



  • Skin disorders like dermatitis
  • Type of Diet
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Styes
  • Dysfunction of tear glands
  • Normal aging process
  • Nephritic syndrome; with puffy eyes becoming the first symptom of this condition
  • Usage of Contact lenses
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Blepharitis
  • Eye infections


When to Seek Medical Attention

Puffy eyes can be a sign of a serious health problem. If the swelling becomes so persistent, seek medical attention and  take eye cream review immediately. If you happen to get a blow to your eyes, seek medical attention immediately even without any form of swelling. Seek medical attention if eye swelling is accompanied by the following symptoms.


  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Swelling in the neck  and face areas
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Redness around the eye


Treatments and Home Remedies for Puffy Eyes

There are so many ways of treating normal puffy eyes that are not caused by any serious health condition. The following is a list of ways to deal with such kind of puffy eyes.


  • Wash your face with ice cold water
  • Use Ice or cold packs
  • Limit the intake of sodium
  • Increase the intake of vitamins and minerals
  • Drink plenty of water daily to clean out your system


Should your case of puffy eyes happen to be due to allergic reactions, discontinue that behavior that promotes that allergy? You can also seek advice from a qualified medical practitioner.

Cucumber is made up 90% water and the rest is just inert fiber. Cucumbers do reduce the swelling but the trick is that it is the water in it that does the magic but not the cucumber itself. Though this effect is good, food products always contain bacteria and therefore cucumber might infect the eyes with bacteria.
