Thobes: The Traditional Islamic Clothing for Islamic Men
A “thobe”or “thwaib” is an Arabic term for a long and loose garment. However, in general terminology, a thobe is considered as the Islamic garment for Islamic men. Thobe is a traditional dress for Islamic men and it has a religious significance associated with it. It is a long, loose shirt or tunic, usually worn as a robe or an outer garment, over a normal dress. Islamic thobes are also worn by women over other garments, but these are more popular among the men. Thobes are known by various names like as dishdasha, kandura, gandora, kanzu etc.
Religious Significance of Thobes
- For all Islamic men, wearing a thobe is a must while offering prayers in a masjid or mosque or for any religious functions, wedding or funeral.
- According to the Quran, wearing a thobe keeps a man away from sins.
- It is also mentioned that a man in a thobe won’t stare, flirt or misbehave with a woman and vice versa.
- He is not allowed to enter any places that have haram (sinful) in them when he is wearing a thobe.
Fabric and Colour of Thobes
Thobes are usually made of cotton fabric. Nowadays, thobes are available in cotton mix fabrics, spandex, rayon, denims etc. For winter climates, thobes are made of wool and other heavier fabrics. The traditional colour of the thobe is white. But it is also available in other colours like as off-white, cream, light brown, light yellow for summers. In the cooler months, the dark coloured thobes are preferred like as black, brown, or navy blue.
Styles of Thobe
The style of the Islamic thobes has undergone changes in recent years with change in fashion trends. The length of the thobes varies. Usually, the length should be ankle length or more. The standard length is 60 inches. The sleeves are traditionally styled as loose and long. But, you also find short sleeves thobes which may seem like a long T-shirt. The collar design can range from round neck, polo neck, shirt collar, short Chinese collar etc. There are buttons from neck to chest or from neck to bottom. To give a formal appearance, some thobes are designed with stiff sleeves and collars. There are thobes with contrast cuffs, collar and pocket. Embroidered thobes, to be worn in special occasions, are there in the market. There are thobes in hooded and sporty styles as well.
