The New Face of Plastic Surgery
Over the past decade, plastic surgeons are taking notice of changes in the types and number of procedures that each individual patient seeks out. Individuals today are not as concerned about making drastic changes during one single surgery, but rather, they are doing a nip here and a tuck there, in small increments, slowly making changes to their appearance that are less dramatic (and less costly) at regular intervals. There are a number of factors motivating changes in the industry as a whole including a shift toward the younger population and technological advances that make surgery less desirable and less necessary.
Member surgeons of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery charged with the task of highlighting emerging trends can’t help but notice a paradigm shift away from more aggressive surgeriestoward procedures that require less downtime, yet still proffer results. Though patients are still looking to have a less than perfect nose altered and breasts enlarged, there is definitely a transformative process going on in terms of the plastic and cosmetic procedures that are most appealing to the public.
One of the reasons for these major changes cited by American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery member surgeons is the fact that patients come in for plastic and cosmetic changes at a younger age. These patients have tighter budgets and less time to take off of work for recovery. Further, they want fast results. So, these younger patients tend to gravitate more toward injections and smaller, less traumatic surgeries, knowing that they’ll back later. They begin the process of making cosmetic changes early with less dramatic outcomes, but continue making small changes throughout their lives.
And one can’t ignore the impact of new technology on plastic surgery today. The use of injections and “energy”-derived therapies involving wavelengths sound or light has certainly opened people’s mind to the possibilities. Low Level Laser Therapy, has been shown to produce body slimming results that involve little patient discomfort and only a minimal time commitment to demonstrate results. Indeed, whereas the possibility of liposuction and body sculpting was once only available to the select few individuals who were willing to endure surgery, could afford the procedure, and take the necessary time off of work, today, body sculpting and fat melting today can take place over a patient’s lunch hour without the need for even a single small incision or local anesthesia. Injections under the skin are starting to replace facelifts as doctors realize gravity may not be the biggest culprit in the fight against aging.
Plastic surgeons are keeping a close eye on new procedures that have recently been developed to see if they take hold and become popular among the masses. In particular, the gluteal implant seems to offer some promise, though interest has so far been slow. A host of other implants, like calf implants, for example, were not as popular as plastic surgeons originally thought they would be. No one knows exactly what the next trend will be, but plastic surgeons know that it’s only a matter of time until the next trend becomes obvious.
