Textile Care Tips

Jul 17th 2015 at 4:56 AM

Textile is the fabric or the interwoven strands of either cotton or silk that make up our clothes. The textile industry is responsible for grooming us for our day to day lives. The distinction between a neatly groomed and a poorly groomed individual is based on how we choose to take care of our clothes.

This article provides insight into how we can go about taking care of our clothing. Textile care tips are a generalization and are not focused on particular types of textile. These tips should serve as guidelines to ensure that your clothes stay sparkling clean, and last you for long.

The textile care tips that are highlighted in this article are pretty much do-it-yourself practices that will significantly improve the way you look. Let’s start off, shall we?

o    Dark coloured clothing should be washed inside-out. This is because they are at a higher risk of fading if washed normally. Black blouses, dark-wash jeans, and densely coloured jackets should be laundered inside-out. This prevents the colours from fading as a result of them rubbing against other clothes during laundry.

o    Invest in a clothesline. This is another fantastic textile care tip especially for those people who are used to having their clothes dry in the dryer. This might work for some types of fabric, but the results can be disastrous when applied to other materials.

Some cloth manufacturers require that their clothes be dried on clotheslines or racks to ensure they serve you longer.

o    Avoid mixing colours. The best practice to ensure that laundering won’t damage your clothes is by sorting the clothes by colour before washing. Whites should particularly be washed separately from other colours. This prevents colours from other clothes from staining the white of your clothes.

o    Avoid washing your clothes so often. A lot of people are obsessed with washing their clothes. As this might ensure they are always clean, washing clothes on the regular can be more damaging than helpful. Instead, one may invest in a number of clothing so that they maybe have to wash once in a month.

Constant washing softens the fabric as well as makes the clothes fade faster.

o    Follow your cloth’s instructions manual. Most if not all clothes come with a small tag on the back or somewhere inside that contains instructions on how to wash, dry, and iron. Don’t ignore such information as it is very vital to your textile’s survival.

o    Learn to practice proper hygiene. As basic as this may sound, a lot of people don’t pay much attention to personal body hygiene. As much as wearing fancy clothes may create the impression that one is hygienic, it is often not true.

You should shower on the regular and wear proper undergarments to prevent sweat from staining your clothes. Also, wear appropriate attire for particular events.

o    Practice cloth rotation. Avoid the tendency of wearing your favourite pair of jeans or jacket. This is a common problem to all of us. We just want to put on that same piece of clothing that we can identify ourselves with. This makes the clothes wear out faster than usual.

Try wearing clothes on a rotational basis as this will ensure they serve you for longer and still look meticulously clean.

In conclusion, this article has not catered for all tips. Instead, it has highlighted some of the very basic textile care tips that you can practice.
