Ouch…I Bwoke my Nothe

Apr 30th 2012 at 10:06 PM

First things first…quit screaming and find something to catch the blood (tissues, paper or cloth towel), then, head for the refrigerator. The swelling will set in quickly. Scope out what you have available; steak is preferable (the enzymes in the meat have a tendency to reduce swelling / bruising and calm the surrounding tissue), but ice, wrapped in a cloth or a bag of frozen vegetables will do. Head for the Emergency room or, if you happen to have a good D.O., Otolaryngologist  or General Practitioner who can set a nose, go to them; oftentimes ER doctors will not ‘reset the nose’ on-the-spot – but, will simply check for septal hematoma (nasal blood clot – dangerous!) and refer you to an ear, nose and throat doctor.

Depending on the way the nose was broken – sometimes, a trained physician familiar with this technique will be able to snap the nose back into position.  If done properly, the nose might heal in a straighter manner. But, many times, it is rather obvious that the nose will need surgery – especially if the septum or cartilage has been compromised. If you attend to a broken nose quickly, it may be possible to repair it immediately.  If you wait more than two weeks, you may need to wait several months before it can be surgically straightened and fixed. The swelling will need to subside, so the surgeon can get a good idea of how your nose may have looked before it was broken.

A broken nose is painful and traumatic. But, if attended to quickly, by competent professionals – you can look as good as new.  OR, if you weren’t that jazzed about your nose, to begin with; maybe you’ll want some modifications, while the damage is being fixed. In any event, choosing a reputable, board-certified otolaryngologist / plastic surgeon is important.
