One- Rule Britannia
The people of America seem to have a strange, begrudging affection for the British. Whether its the royal family, high tea or gorgeous British escorts, many nations hold their stereotype ridden view of our culture close to their hearts. What makes it all the more odd is that their country was, obviously, once subjugated by British colonialism. In many ways, it could be compared to stockholm syndrome where you begin to feel a strange level of warmth towards your captures, even though they’re holding you for their own gains...
The people of the United States fought hard to seize their independence from our empire and forge its own republic. Yet, it seems the rebellion of the boston tea party was all for nought, as many Americans look upon the British for emotions ranging from jealousy to adoration. Almost everything British is regarded as twee there, and our musical exports are making huge waves. In many ways, this can be seen as part of a collective impression of Europe. The continent is seen as being somewhere far more cultured that the United States and is associated with the great classics of art and literature. Many US citizens seek to escape the cliche of being dumb and slovenly by showing affection for what is generally regarded as a cultured nation. This time of pseudo intellectual posturing is bizarrely absent from many portrayals in popular culture, although the Crane brothers’ anglophilic actions in Frasier are masterful to the extreme. They help to reveal the sheer posturing of it all, especially when considering that the main English force in the show is more interested in washing the whites than talking about opera or theatrical productions.
Hollywood has certainly started to turn towards British actors more and more in recent times. Once relegated to being weedy sidekicks or bad guys, we now appear much more frequently on the big screen in positive roles. Remarkably, the actor cast to play one of the nation’s most iconic heroes- Lincoln- is British! English women are no longer regarded as plain or dentally deprived and many have been getting the most desirable leads that Tinseltown has to offer. Similarly many top business men are now requesting British escorts as it becomes more and more fashionable to enjoy the delights of a delicate English rose.
@The notable exception to this sentiment seems to be found in diction. Although many Americans are keen to imitate English culture, when it comes to their language they are convinced that they know best. Sometimes it’s just an altered spelling, a z instead of an s, but in some cases the words are rather different. Ask a Brit and an American what flexible foil you wrap many food products in is akin to pulling the pin from a grenade and dangling in front of your face. It rages with a burning heat that can only really be challenged by the great scone scon debate!
