Chin Augmentation Gains Popularity Among Professionals
Chin augmentation is a cosmetic procedure designed to define and enhance the jaw line that most people are availing these days. In fact, its popularity soared in just one year, making it more popular than breast augmentation, Botox injections and liposuction. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 10, 593 males and 10,087 females underwent the procedure in 2011, showing a 76% and 66% rise over the past year, respectively. This statistics proved that chin augmentation outdid lip augmentation, cheek implants and facelift which only showed 49%, 47% and 5% increase, respectively.
This recent trend can be puzzling, especially since Botox injections are still the most talked about non-invasive procedure offered by most clinics but actually, it has logic to it. In a report made by the ASPS, chin implants are more popular among patients over 40 years old. The reason behind is that, the jawline and the chin are usually where the first signs of aging are seen. Once a certain age is reached- particularly for women who are experiencing hormonal changes due to impending menopause- the skin on the face becomes loose and dry. This then tends to droop, which is very visible along the chin and jawline. Another reason is that nothing can really be done to alter one’s chin. If someone doesn’t have a well-defined chin, he can’t undergo any diet or exercise regimen to alter it; unlike obesity which can be addressed by diet, exercise or liposuction. It’s either one will have it that way or have a surgeon improve one’s chin.
Technological advancements have also played their role in influencing people to have chin implants. This has even caused a number of patients who are below 40 years old to have this procedure. iPhone’s FaceTime shocks users of the way they look in front of the camera. Some aren’t satisfied with the way they look so they choose to have chin implants done. This way, they’d have a more natural distinction between their neck and face. Medical-related television programs, such as The Doctors, have also contributed to the increase of chin implant patients because it has readily provided information about the procedure.
According to Dr. Darrick Antell, a plastic surgeon in New York, he has done this procedure to a number of company executives who equate the chin with power. People have this mental image of a CEO or an executive as a person who is tall, good-looking, charming and attractive. They also tend to have a strong chin which exudes that aura of having authority or power. Thus, most people subconsciously associate a leader with a strong chin. Surprisingly, this is true. According to a study done by Dr. Antell, almost 90% of the chief executives of the top 500 Fortune companies in 2007 have a stronger chin compared to the average population.
Chin implantation or augmentation is a fairly easy procedure. A small incision is made under the chin where the implant is then placed. Since a small cut is made, the recovery time is relatively short. Also, it is reversible so the patient may opt to have the implant removed in the future. Of course, there may be a chance of complications such as infection, numbness and bleeding but it rarely occurs. When considering chin implants, it is best to look for a board-certified surgeon who has ample experience on the procedure. It would also help if he has hospital privileges, though most surgeons perform this procedure in a clinic or office. Asking for other surgeons who perform the procedure won’t hurt since this would give people options to choose from.
