Cheek Augmentation Gets a Share of the Limelight

Apr 30th 2012 at 11:20 PM

Various ways can be done to achieve that certain degree of perfection most people dream of. In everyone’s eyes, each person has a quality that can be called beautiful. Having surgical or cosmetic procedures is just one way of having that certain beauty. Nose jobs, liposuction and Botox injections are by far, the most commonly availed services. On the list is another cosmetic procedure which most people overlook, and it is called cheek augmentation.

Cheek augmentation can be done by either having cheek lifts or cheek fillers in place. Regardless which of the two is chosen, the main goal is the same – to get rid of loose skin and achieve a more vibrant and youthful look. As one ages, the most obvious changes are seen in the face. The skin sags and hangs loose on bony prominences, particularly the cheekbones and the jawline. This is the reason why most traditional facelifts create incisions and pull the skin over these areas. Despite being an effective means of looking younger, facelifts only focus on the neck and the lower part of the face. These are also considered major operations which entail a more careful approach. Further, there are also celebrities whose facelifts might have gone in the wrong direction and did not produce its desired product. These are the reasons why cheek augmentation has been steadily gaining popularity these days.

According to American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics, the number of patients who have undergone cheek lift in Washington, DC. Cheek implants has grown to 47%, or almost 12,000 patients in 2011. A Washington, DC plastic surgeon, Dr. Mark Richards, shared an observation based on the patients he sees in his clinic. He said that cheek lifts, implants and fillers have now become the top choice of patients who want to look younger. He says that the cheeks are very important structures when it comes to dictating the shape of one’s face. The area in the mid-face is actually the focal point in achieving a more attractive yet natural looking face.

Cheek lifts are usually done through by making two small incisions inside the roof of the mouth and two along the patient’s hairline. The skin over these areas are then pulled and stitched in place. This then lifts the sagging fat or skin to fix the position of the cheeks to achieve a younger look. Also, this addresses the tired-looking eyes many people have since it decreases the vertical distance between the lower eyelid’s lash to the cheeks. For the incisions made inside the mouth, these are usually done when a cheek implant is desired. To achieve higher cheekbones, cheek implants are inserted in the upper cheek to make one’s face look fuller. This is especially helpful for patients who have sunken faces brought about by weight loss and aging.

Another latest innovation is the use of Sculptra® which is a non-invasive way of adding volume to one’s face. With a 20% increase in its sales, it is unquestionable that the use of this filler has increased. Designed to restore the lost muscle tissue and produce more collagen in the face, this non-invasive technology offers more lasting effects, with a minimum time period of two years.

With these technological advancements at people’s disposal, the option of going through a more radical and major surgery such as facelift can be postponed. This is actually better since patients are given an option that is less invasive but will ultimately have the same effect. They are also saved from the physical, emotional, and not to mention, mental stress they might encounter with major surgeries.
