Time for a Little Spring Cleaning!
It's spring cleaning time! And I don't mean the garage. With spring just around the corner, it's time to cleanse our bodies too.
Prevention is the best medicine, and frequent body cleanses can help us avoid major health problems later. Cleansing also gives us an opportunity to start living a healthier lifestyle. With the stresses of modern living and the constant exposure to chemicals and denatured food, detoxifying the body becomes a necessary means to good health.
Ideally, to maintain a healthy lifestyle, we should eat only fresh organic whole foods, get plenty of exercise and fresh air, and achieve quality rest patterns every day. But this regime is almost impossible for most people to maintain.
Detoxifying and cleansing the body helps maintain optimum health and can reduce the symptoms of many conditions such as allergies, candida, acne, depression, weight gain, headaches, PMS, menopause, digestive problems, and arthritis.
When our internal systems are in a toxic state, the vital organs are overloaded - in particular, the liver. Your liver is responsible for - among other things - proper digestion, assimilation of nutrients, energy production, immune function and, most importantly, elimination of toxins. Liver problems are often an indication that our bodies are being subjected to more toxins than the liver is able to handle. Here are some suggestions for natural ways to cleanse the body and give your liver a helping hand.
Milk thistle has unique properties that have the ability to prevent toxic damage to liver cells, liver function, improve the flow of bile through the biliary tract and improve liver enzymes. Research studies have shown that it can increase survival in patients with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis.
Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant which is effective against both water-soluble and fat-soluble free radicals, and which can mimic the effect of natural antioxidants such as Vitamin C or E, as well as glutathione.
Besides reducing liver congestion, dandelion can lower cholesterol levels in the blood, by increasing the output of bile.
Taken in combination, the above three components can support and detoxify the liver when it has been exposed to high levels of toxins.
Sheep sorrel has been shown to be effective as a tonic for the urinary tract, relieving internal ulcers, jaundice, specific skin diseases, chronic conditions and degenerative diseases.
As a blood purifier, burdock root helps to clear congestion in the circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory and urinary systems. It can help eliminate excess fluids in the body and stimulate the elimination of toxic waste materials, give relief for liver disorders, and improve digestion.
Slippery elm is one of nature's miracle cleansers. Its sticky substance (mucilage) dissolves mucus that has been deposited in organ tissue, lymph glands and nerve channels and is soothing to the digestive system. The mucilage gathers up dissolved toxic waste materials from all areas in the body, including the bowel and helps to discharge them.
Turkey rhubarb is another remarkable detoxifying herb which has been used throughout the world for centuries because of its proven healing properties. It has been shown to help heal ulcers, alleviate disorders of the spleen and colon, relieve constipation, and heal hemorrhoids and bleeding in the upper digestive tract.
