Male Breast Reduction … More Common Than You May Think
In a recent Health segment featured in the Palm Beach Post titled “Ask the Plastic Surgeon,” Board-certified plastic surgeon Brian Hass, MD addressed a fairly common, yet embarrassing issue called gynecomastia when he responded to the question: “My husband is embarrassed to take his shirt off on our boat. He feels like he has breasts like a woman. Can this be corrected?”
Dr. Brian Hass explained a condition that impacts many men, where they develop excess tissue and fat in one or both breasts due to glandular issues and/or genetics. The causes may be hereditary, hormonal, dietary or even due to medications, weight gain or loss. But the condition, medically known as gynecamastia, causes many men to be ashamed and embarrassed of their upper body and physique.
Now that summer is just around the corner, many men will be wondering the same question, can this be cured and is there a cosmetic procedure to correct it?
The answer is yes, and Dr. Hass shared his surgical insights and knowledge with readers.
“The good news is that breast-reduction procedures for men are relatively simple with little downtime. In cases where the chest/breast area is primarily excess fatty tissue, then liposuction may be the solution. If the breast tissue is glandular, or there is also excess skin drooping, then the surgical approach would be slightly more involved,” Hass wrote. Then he concluded, “Either way, we have found most males of any age are completely thrilled with the surgical results … patients tells us they feel less self-conscious in their fitted shirts and are not embarrassed to go shirtless on the beach, gym or boat.”
