Healthy diet - A supportive measure to your workout

Most people recognize that the mind and body are very linked, that how you think impacts how you feel and behave. Yet, those same people might work out hard without changing their diet and act surprised when they do not see the results that they expected; or, they might make massive changes in how they eat without exercising and have the same surprise. The fact is that diet and exercise go hand in hand when it comes to building a healthy body. And if you like to exercise, what you eat is an important part of ensuring that you have the strength to push through an effective workout.

Role of Food in Our Body

Food serves two purposes in our bodies. First, it provides energy, in the form of calories. We essentially burn this energy, very similar to how a fireplace burns wood. Second, food provides nutrients that help your body to build cells of all types, including muscle.

Building Muscle with Exercise and Food

To build muscle you need to do, at minimum, two things: 1) You need to provide your body with nutrients that help to build muscle, things such as protein, calcium, and vitamins B and C. 2) You need to work out your muscles to encourage them to grow larger. You can eat all the nutrients that you want, but if you do not work the muscles in your body they will not be encouraged to grow. On the other hand, you can try to lift heavy weights, but your body also needs nutrient to run those muscles, and to build and repair muscle fibers for which you can even try bulk supplements.

Losing Fat through Eating and Exercise

The situation is similar when it comes to losing fat; exercise alone cannot do this. Take a competitive body builder: they work out and build huge muscles, but this does not make them ready for competition. Before they go into a body building competition they spend weeks doing extreme dieting to remove the fat in their body so that their muscles show up better.

This is not to say that you have to starve yourself to lose fat, or that exercise doesn’t help. Certainly building muscle helps lose fat a lot, specifically because muscle burns more calories than fat, so when you build up your muscle you increase your metabolism and thus burn more fat. But, exercise alone – weight lifting or aerobic – is not enough. You must also cut out high fat foods which are too easily turned into fat. If you are looking to lose fat or weight you must, simply, consume fewer calories than you expend.

Boosting Your Immune System


Working out is hard on the body, even though it is good for you. Exercise depletes your body of nutrients and pushes it in ways that can weaken your immune system. The answer to this one, though, is easy; by eating a healthful diet filled with fruits and vegetables, and perhaps taking the occasional multi-vitamin, immune booster, or probiotic, you can give your immune system the extra kick that it needs to stay healthy no matter how hard you work your body or how many germs you pick up at the gym. What’s more, eating well also increases your stamina, giving you the physical and emotional energy to work out faster, longer, and achieve your goals more quickly.
